The Eternal Fashion Debate: Shoes or Bags?

The Eternal Fashion Debate: Shoes or Bags?

Accessories play a pivotal role in elevating one's style quotient. Among the myriad of accessories available, shoes and bags stand out as quintessential pieces that can either make or break an outfit. The eternal debate rages on: which of these two accessories reigns supreme? Let's delve into the contrasting viewpoints to unravel this age-old conundrum.

Functionality vs Aesthetic Appeal:

Proponents of shoes argue that they are the foundation of any outfit, providing both style and functionality. The right pair of shoes can not only complement an ensemble but also offer comfort and support throughout the day. Whether you’re a sleek stilettos siren, kitten heel princess to a comfortable trainers kind-of-girl, shoes come in various styles to cater to different occasions and preferences.

On the other hand, advocates for bags contend that they are more than just utilitarian accessories; they are symbols of status and style. A well-crafted handbag can instantly elevate a look, adding sophistication and flair. Moreover, bags serve a practical purpose by offering storage for essentials, making them indispensable for modern-day living.

Versatility vs Statement Pieces:

Shoes are often touted for their versatility, with a single pair capable of being styled in multiple ways to suit various outfits. A classic pair of black pumps, for instance, can seamlessly transition from office attire to evening wear, making them a wardrobe staple for many fashion enthusiasts.

In contrast, bags are celebrated for their ability to make a massive statement. Whether it's a bold clutch, bedazzled Lady Dior or even a mundane monogrammed designer bag, bags have the power to inject personality into an outfit, serving as focal points that draw attention and admiration. They allow individuals to express their unique sense of style, creativity or/and social status, making them indispensable accessories for fashion-forward individuals.

Investment Pieces vs Trendy Accents:

Some argue that shoes are worth investing in, as high-quality footwear can withstand the test of time and provide enduring comfort and style. Investing in timeless classics such as leather boots or loafers is seen as a prudent decision, as they can be worn season after season without losing their allure.

Conversely, bags are often viewed as trendy accents that reflect the latest fashion fads. While investing in a designer handbag may hold its value over time, many opt for more affordable options that align with current trends and preferences.

So which accessory should be prioritized for a luxurious splurge when beginning to build up one's wardrobe?

Personally, I’m sort of an everything-kind-of-girl- bags, shoes, jewellery and more. I think every accessory plays a crucial indispensable role to your outfit. I can’t pick a team, sorry! However, I do have the perfect girl math formula for this problem.

First and foremost, I strongly believe shoes are grossly underrated by the average woman. A true fashion savant does not underestimate the value of beautifully well-crafted shoes. It may not seem to bring much to the table at first because it is in fact the legs that hold the table up.

I find that investing in three good classic bags (subjective to your style) goes a long way than three shoes ever will. An everyday top handle black bag or shoulder bag in a classic design can be worn and restyled in a multitude of ways- especially if it comes with a detachable crossbody strap. It’s like a never-ending cheat code for your wardrobe. Couple that with two more bags: one in another neutral, classic colour such as beige or brown, and the other in a vibrant shade- one you see yourself reaching out to often to add some colour to your outfits. Alternatively, the variety could be in size and design instead of colour or it could be both!

However, unlike bags I’ve noticed that shoes exhibit a higher degree of selectivity and are less amenable to coercion in terms of functionality. Yes, black pumps can be versatile but that depends on how versatile you are too. It’s time to pay attention to your outfits. Not every look goes with an open-toed design; some require a nice pointed toe to add the final touch, some require embellishments on the shoes- straps, crystals, lace. Some require a plain Jane, some require a shorter heel, some require no heel, some require no heel and uncovered and vice versa. The required combinations are limitless.

As Christian Dior succinctly proves my point- "You can never take too much care over the choice of your shoes. Too many women think that they are unimportant, but the real proof of an elegant woman is what is on her feet". Exactement monsieur! I believe, an elegant women should do well to remember how her shoes can set and change the tone and attitude of her outfit. They physically and emotionally uplift you and they are either the first or last thing people see when they give you the habitual head-to-toe look over.

Handbags advocates raise up a good point about being better investments for resale and their longevity. Although I agree on the point of longevity, I don’t really focus much on how it retains value on the market, simply because I only buy things I’m absolutely in love with and have no intention of selling or parting with in the future. My recommended signature girl math fashion theorem is investing in at least 3 staple bags and splurging on shoes! So, for one bag you have, you should have 3 shoes- A perfect ratio of 1:3.

The Verdict

Both accessories hold significant importance in the realm of fashion. While shoes provide the foundation for an outfit and offer comfort and versatility, bags serve as the focal point that adds flair and functionality to any ensemble. Ultimately, the importance of shoes or bags as accessories boils down to individual preferences, style sensibilities, and the specific demands of the occasion. Whether you're a shoe aficionado or a bag enthusiast, one thing remains certain: both accessories have the power to transform an outfit and leave a lasting impression. If it is within your financial scope, embrace the best of both worlds and indulge in the endless possibilities that shoes and bags have to offer. If not, use my formula to build up your new wardrobe or whatever feels right for you. After all, in fashion, there are no strict rules.
